Transition and adherence

People with cystic fibrosis have to endure a daily regime involving hours of nebulisers, physiotherapy and up to 70 tablets a day, just to stay healthy.

Some of these treatments can be tiring, uncomfortable or unpleasant. Current treatment regimes are time-consuming and relentless, which means that people with cystic fibrosis rarely manage to completely adhere to all of their treatments.

This is particularly an issue during adolescence and when a teenager transfers from paediatric to adult care centres. We need to take a holistic approach to this, which will include psychosocial approaches, training, different physiotherapy regimes and novel interventions.

New technology will play a key role in the future, from improved delivery systems for inhalers and nebulisers that reduce treatment times, to smart technologies using novel diagnostics and devices to use in the home.
