Health and wellbeing grants

Health and wellbeing grants help purchase goods or services which can improve your health and quality of life.

What is a health and wellbeing grant? 

Typical goods purchased through the grants scheme would include:

  • Exercise equipment
  • Refrigerators  
  • Washing machines
  • Furniture when moving to a new home

Typical services would include:

  • Gym fees

Grants will usually be for around £250 to £350. Please note, we are unable to provide grants for any medical equipment, including nebulisers.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust provides separate grants towards the cost of holidays, trips and short breaks for people aged 18 and over who have cystic fibrosis. Find out more about our holiday grants.

Who can apply?

Demand for these grants is high, and we want to make sure that grants are going to the people who need them most.

We would ask people who have enough income, savings or funds to meet these costs not to apply.

In the application we ask about specific reasons why you might not be able to meet these costs yourself. This information will help us to make a fair decision about your application.

Reasons could include:

  • Having a household income less than the Joseph Rowntree Foundation-assessed Minimum Income Standard (we explain this more in the next section).        
  • A reduction in income due to benefits being withdrawn or put on a lower rate following PiP, ESA or other benefits reassessment.
  • A reduction in benefits following assessment as an adult at age 16.
  • Loss of employment or reduction in working hours.  
  • Leaving the family home.
  • Leaving full-time education.

These are just examples, and there may be other reasons that affect you. There is space in the application form for you to tell us about these.

People cannot apply for more than one Health and wellbeing grant per year.

Minimum Income Standard

Like many other charities, we recognise the Minimum Income Standard that has been developed on behalf of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The Minimum Income Standard for the UK shows how much money people need, so that they can buy things that members of the public think that everyone in the UK should be able to afford.

How to apply

When applying for these grants please let us know exactly how much the goods or services are going to cost.

You can apply for grants for goods or services that you have already purchased, up to two months before the date of your application. Please note that we cannot guarantee that your application will be successful, and, even if successful, you may receive an award less than the amount you requested.

We will need a supporting statement from a health care professional, such as your specialist centre social worker, clinician or nurse. They will be asked to explain how the grant will benefit you, and if there are any risks to your wellbeing if the grant is not awarded.

If you are not able to get to your specialist centre, please arrange for them to email with their supporting statement. They will need to give their name and contact details, as well as your name, date of the application and amount requested, so we can match their statement to your application.

What happens next?

Decisions on these grants are made by an independent panel which meets every two months.

The panel might decide to award your grant request in full or make a payment that is less than the amount you requested. If this is the case you will receive your grant within two weeks of the decision.

Unfortunately, there may not be sufficient resources to meet all the grant applications we receive. If this is the case, your application may be turned down, or deferred to the next panel. You will be written to within a week of the decision if this is the case.

The next grant panel meetings take place on: 27 September 2018 (deadline for applications: 11 September) and 15 November 2018 (deadline for application: 6 November). Grant panel meetings will be held in January, March, May, July, September and November.


Grants can be paid by cheque or BACS transfer to your bank account. A BACS transfer can be processed quicker and is preferred if possible. We aim for payments to be made within a week of the decision.

If you do not have a bank account we can arrange for the payment to be made to a trusted third party. Please call the helpline or grants assistant to discuss.
